Mission Statement
Literacy Volunteers of America-Schoharie County, Inc.  (LVSC) is a not for profit corporation that provides trained volunteers to help persons develop the basic literacy skills necessary to reach their individual potential.
General Information
   * All services are free of charge and confidential
   * Convenient evening hours available
   * Multiple tutoring sites available throughout the county
   * Individualized instruction for adults in reading, writing, and speaking

     English

   * Instruction in math available
   * GED preparatory instruction
   * Trained volunteer tutors who are kind, understanding, and patient
   * Tutor training workshops
   * Family literacy programs
   * Guidance and support for tutors and students
   * Newsletter
LVSC was founded in 1989 by a small grass roots organization of Schoharie County residents who believed in the principle that the ability to read and write, to understand and be understood is critical to personal freedom and the maintenance of a democratic society.  In 1991, the organization incorporated under the laws of the state of New York.  LVSC is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide and affiliated with Literacy New York. 
LVSC currently offers three instructional programs- Basic Literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and GED preparatory instruction.
 

LVSC is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America and Literacy New York. ProLiteracy America, the largest adult literacy organization in the United States, was established on October 1, 2002 with the merger of Laubach Literacy and Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. ProLiteracy America has 1200 affiliates and is represented in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. As an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, LVSC has access to the best training, resources, and support available to adult education programs. In addition, ProLiteracy advocates on behalf of affiliates for legislation and funding that support local programs and volunteers.
